Common Assessments: Monday October 11- Tuesday October 12

Common Assessments are internal assessments to give feedback to students for growth and achievement. Assessments will be on Monday, October 11 and 12th.  Students will be attending class as usual and taking exams in math, science, social studies, and ELA. It is important for students to be present on testing days. Common Assessments do make up a part of the students’ semester grades.

Please ensure your student is present and on time ready to begin exams by 8:30 am and will be dismissed at the same time 4:00 pm. As a reminder, Friday, October 15th is student holiday.  If you have any questions, please reach out to Barinia Uribe, director of Academics at Barinia.uribe@yesprep.org.

Successful Lockdown Drill:

Thank you for your support in preparing your Aviator for our lockdown safety drill last Friday. The drill ran smoothly, and our practice was successful.

The 2022-2023 school year lottery application window will open Friday October 29th, 2021 and closes on February 11th, 2022. Starting on Oct. 29th, we will begin accepting applications for grades 6th – 9th

Mandatory Tutorials for Select Students (Start October 4th)

Mandatory tutorials for select students begin after-school the week of October 4th and runs after-school and on Saturdays. Not all students are required to attend tutorials, only those students who receive a letter and a phone call. Students were selected for these tutorials as a result of legislation passed in Texas (House Bill 4545), and are required to attend 30 hours of intervention or tutorials. This is a result of students' 2021 STAAR scores.

If you are unsure if your student needs to attend, please call the front office (713)-842-5600

See Something, Say Something!

We value the relationships that we have built through the years with our parents. Did you know that often you all are the reason that we are able to stop incidents before they start? You have access to information first hand from your children that can impact the safety of your student at school. When you have this information, we ask that you SEE SOMETHING AND SAY SOMETHING. Please complete a SAF using the link below if you hear of any issues that may affect the safety of your child at school. This can be bullying, threats of violence, or even disturbing things you may see on social media. Together we can make Hobby a safe place for all students.

We ensure all students are getting the social, emotional, and/or mental health support they need to be successful. If you notice a change in behavior, something has changed at home, or if your student has asked to talk to someone, we are here for to help! Feel free to message us, give us a call or fill out our Student Assistance Form with any questions or concerns.

Harmful TikTok Trends at School

TikTok is an online app that allows users to post short videos of various activities. Anyone who has access to the internet can download and use this app. Recently, videos have may be promoting harmful behavior at school, such as "Devious Licks." Students who participated in the "Devious Licks" trend have vandalized and/or stolen school property. News has been circulating that more harmful trends will be promoted monthly. You can see the list below.

Please talk to your children about these or any other harmful trends or any actions that go against our YES Prep behavior and community expectation and encourage them to NOT participate in them. We share this reminder as it has been brought to our attention that students have engaged in some of these harmful and inappropriate behaviors.

  • October: Slap a staff member
  • November: Kiss someone else's girl

  • March: Make a mess in the cafeteria or courtyard
  • April: Grab boys' privates

YES Prep students are expected to behave in a manner that promotes care for all individuals, contributes to a safe environment for students, and provides an educational environment free of disruption. Please remember that all students are expected to adhere to the school expectations and YES Prep Student Handbook.  Any students who are not adhering to these expectations outlined in the YES Prep Student Handbook will be held to the consequences outlined in the Code of Conduct. The school may call authorities depending on the level of the misconduct.

Thank you so much for your assistance! We appreciate your partnership as we work to help students understand how their actions impact other people. We know that with your support, our students will continue to grow and become more successful. For additional recommendations, please review the tips below.

Virtual College Fair, Thursday, October 14, 2021

William Keaton, Manager of Special Projects

As you know, COVID-19 has changed the way we operate and that includes the college search process. Rest assured that we are doing everything possible to minimize the disruption for your child.  Each year, YES Prep offers an annual college fair.  Even with many college not traveling to recruit this fall, YES Prep is still offering a digital college fair for Juniors and Seniors.  This fall we have reached out to a variety of colleges and will be hosting 160 colleges and universities for next week's college fair, including 16 Historically Black Colleges and Universities and 30 Hispanic Serving Institutions.

The YES Prep College Fair on October 14, 2021 from 9 AM to 12 PM will allow your child to connect to up to 18 colleges and universities over the 3 hour period.  Juniors and seniors are receiving information on how to register for the different panels offered during the college fair through their Junior and Senior Seminars, but we want to ensure as a parent, you are aware of the College Fair.  Family members are able to access the college fair as well.  If you are not able to join live, all sessions will be recorded, and will be available for students and families to watch together.

Talk with your student, and log into Schoology with them to review upcoming schedule for the college fair. If you have any questions please reach out to your campus Director of College Counseling or College Counselors.
