Vision and Hearing Screening Notice for 6th and 7th Grade!

Families, we are starting 6th and 7th grade vision and hearing screenings the week of 3/2. Please anticipate your students being pulled from elective courses for the screenings.

The State of Texas mandates that all students in the 6th & 7th grade get their vision screening done within the first 120 days of school. YES Prep Public Schools – Hobby Secondary, Certified Medical Assistant will be conducting this screening on Monday, 03/2/2026.

Before a screening is conducted, it is important that parents are informed this vision screening is not a substitute for an eye examination.

Many vision problems in children go undetected by parents, teachers and the children themselves without a formal vision assessment. Vision screening can help detect or identify a problem with a child’s eyesight so it can be caught early when treatment can be most effective. If a problem is detected, the child’s parent or guardian is notified and the child is referred for further evaluation and treatment if necessary.

If not detected and treated early, vision problems in children can lead to a variety of long-term consequences. Untreated vision problems can lead to: Permanent loss of vision and difficulty learning.

The procedure for this screening is simple. Screening will be conducted during a specific time agreed upon by the lead teacher and campus Medical Assistant. The Medical Assistant will set up in a separate room away from any disturbances. Each student will be screened individually. The student will look through a vision screening machine with current glasses (if any) or not. They will read the letters depending on the line the Medical Assistant asks them to read for both near and far vision.

If your child wears glasses or contacts please inform them to wear them on the day of the screening.

You will be notified if your child failed the screening. If your child passed, this screening should not replace an eye appointment with an eye doctor. Vision screening does not evaluate eye health and important vision skills needed for success in school. Only an examination by an eye doctor can identify eye and vision problems and prescribe treatment.

If you have any questions, need further information or as a parent would like to attend while your child is being screened, please contact me at the number listed below. Thank you for your cooperation in support of our commitment to excellence in education.

Why is it important to have your child’s hearing screened?

  • Hearing is important for speech, language development, reading and learning.
  • A hearing screening can detect if your child needs further hearing testing.
  • Even if your child has passed a hearing screening previously, their hearing can change.
  • Hearing problems can be related to medical problems.

Hearing screening will consist of this test:

  • Audiometry: Screening of hearing acuity.

The procedure for the screening is simple. Screening will be conducted during a specific time agreed upon by the lead teacher and campus Medical Assistant. The Medical Assistant will set up in a separate room away from any noise or disturbances. Each student will be screened individually. They will sit in a chair and place the Audiometer headphones on. Once they hear a certain “pitch” on either side of the ear they will raise their hand, indicating they were able to hear the “pitch.” Once completed, the student will return to class.

If your child uses hearing aids or any kind of hearing device please inform them to wear them on the day of the screening.

If your child passes the hearing screening, you may not be contacted by the campus Medical Assistant. A hearing screening only provides a snapshot of how your child performs on the day the test was administered and is not a substitute for a complete hearing evaluation by an audiologist.

If your child fails either part of the screening, a re-test and referral will be made by the Medical Assistant. You will be informed of test results and necessary follow-up only if your child fails the re-screen.

If you have any questions, need further information or as a parent would like to attend while your child is being screened, please contact me at the number listed below. Thank you for your cooperation in support of our commitment to excellence in education.
