Average Daily Attendance:

Families, attendance is very important to the success of your Aviator at Hobby. Our annual attendance goal is 94.1% and currently we are at 93.7%. Please be sure your Aviator attends school every day and is present by 8:30 AM. Attendance matters!

Course Offering Adjustments and schedule changes:

We are excited to announce that based on the recruitment efforts of our Aviator community and our commitment to preparing college-ready Aviators in a safe, inclusive, and joyful school, we enrolled 40 more student than projected-the most in the district!

Based on the additional enrollment, we were awarded two new teachers by our district home office; they are hired and project to start the week of October 30th. We will have a dedicated CTE teacher who will focus on expanding our academic offerings for middle and high school students in technology. We will increase our physical education course offerings, a required course for some middle and a credit necessary for graduation for all high school students! We’ll also balance some of our middle school and high school Art course and some additional ninth and tenth grade classes.

Over the next few weeks, you may see some changes to your Aviators schedule as we welcome the adjustments to our course offerings! Again, this will help reduce some of our class sizes, offer additional career and technical education courses for our students, and provide a larger pathway for excellence. These changes will be communicated directly to students before their new schedules start so that they are prepared for their new classes.

Copies of your student’s schedule are available to view on Skyward at any time.

If you have any questions, please reach out to the front office at 713-842-5600.

Common Assessments:

Aviator Families – it's Common Assessment Time! Your Aviator will embark on their Fall adventure of completing their Common Assessments for a majority of their courses. CAs are the first opportunity for all of our Aviators to experience a STAAR-like exam and for us to collect data to adjust instructionally that best support each individual student. CAs take place November 13th – 16th. Attendance is vital to ensuring that your Aviator is best prepared to take and EXCEL on their Common Assessments so be sure they are here every day by 8:30 AM. CAs are worth 5% of the students’ overall grade and cannot be retaken. See below for exams that will be given the week of Nov. 13th – 16th.

Cell Phones:

In order to remove as many distractions as possible from the classroom, we have a campus wide cell phone policy. This policy states that your student should not use their cell phone during the school day, including in the hallways or restrooms. Students using their phone will be asked to turn their phone in to campus staff until the end of the day. Multiple infractions will result in a guardian needing to come to campus to pick up the device. High school students have earned certain privileges for cell phone use during designated times. Failure to meet certain expectations may result in loss of this privilege. We appreciate you talking to you student about responsible decision making in regards to their cell phone and technology.

Attendance Challenge:

Attendance is important to the success of our Aviators at school. School starts at 8:30 every day and students should be present and on time to ensure they are set up for success. We are starting an initiative for our students who are meeting these expectations with a weekly attendance picnic starting on Friday, November 3rd. Students who are present Monday – Friday will be able to eat their lunch either in the pavilion or outside in the courtyard on Friday and use their personal electronic device as long as they meet safety expectations.

Dress Code:

We believe that a unified dress code helps build a positive school community. Please review our school dress code policy below. As a reminder, students must be meeting our dress code expectations to go to class. Any day there is a spirit day, students will be notified in advance and we will communicate on family notes and social media. Students who earn free dress for different incentives will have a pass for that day. If you have any questions regarding dress code, please reach out to Ms. Peck, Ms. Francis, or your students Grade Level Chair.

Calculators- Key to Exam Success:

In order to ensure that our students are successful in Math, we require all 8th through 12th grade students to own a TI-nspire calculator.  High School Math has increasingly been aimed at preparing students for success in college courses and 21st century careers.  The use of a graphing calculator in Math classes has been shown to allow students to deepen their mathematical reasoning skills while simultaneously developing technology skills that students can use in their future.  Students will be able to use the calculator we are requiring them to buy for 8th grade as well as all of high school (including AP, SAT, ACT, & STAAR exams). Students can also use this graphing calculator in certain college classes.

This is a reminder that calculators for Math 8, Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II students should be purchased by Nov. 10th for Common Assessments.

The TI-nspire graphing calculators are sold in retailers like Walmart, Office Depot, Staples, etc., and generally range in price from $100-$150.  New, used, and refurbished TI-nspire calculators can also be found online on sites such as Amazon.com and eBay. Please do not purchase a TI-nspire CAS.
