Greetings, Aviator Families –

I hope that you are all having a wonderful week! We are so grateful for your continued partnership.

This month we continue to celebrate Black History Month at YES Prep Hobby, and we are looking forward to having Spirit Week during the week of February 21st. Be on the look out for more information!

We are also less than one month away from our Spring Common Assessments! Spring Common Assessments will take place during the week of March 7th, and we will get important data to work to prepare your students for their STAAR exams during the month of May.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Valentine’s Day Expectations:

We ask that you give your student their Valentine’s Day gift at home. Deliveries of candy, flowers, or gifts will be delivered to students at the end of the day. This is to minimize the distraction to the school day.

Lunch deliveries are accepted during the day as part of our regular lunch policy. Lunch deliveries must be dropped off by a parent and can only be for your student. Please do not send food deliveries through a food delivery service like Uber or Door Dash. Please do not send food for your student to share with others at lunch.

Students who receive gifts from others will be asked to place them in the back of the classroom or in their locker to minimize distractions. Students will not be able to eat during class, or share food with others.

YES Prep Hobby High School Opening August 2022

The countdown is on to the opening of YES Prep Hobby Secondary’s High School in August 2022! We are so excited for the Class of 2026 to reach this milestone in their YES Prep Hobby career.

You do not have to submit an application to the YES Prep Lottery for 9th grade at YES Prep Hobby if your Aviator is already an 8th grade student at YES Prep Hobby. YES Prep students are guaranteed a seat if they meet all promotion requirements for their grade level.

We will hold a Hobby High School Night on Thursday, March 3rd for families to learn more about our high school program and college initiatives program! Be on the look out for more information soon.

7th Grade STAAR Field Test:

On February 15, 7th grade students will be taking a STAAR Field Test in the morning. What this means is 7th grade students will take a STAAR test on their YES Prep device and data will be collected for Texas Education Agency. Their exams will not be graded and the school, families do not have access to the scores. The Field Test is only a data collection for TEA. Please have your students arrive on time and share with your students to try their best. Thank you.

Bus Tracking App and Bus Communication

Our bus service tries its best to be on time at stops in the morning and afternoon. Occasionally the bus runs into a problem with traffic or construction which causes it to run late to your stop. We encourage all families to download and use the bus tracking app to monitor where the bus is on its route to your stop.

Morning Late Arrival

If the bus is more than 10 minutes late in the morning to your stop, please call the front office and report it so we can contact Huerta Bus Service for an update.

Afternoon Late Arrival

Once the office learns that a bus is delayed to stops in the afternoon, we will post it over our social media. If your student has a phone, we ask them to contact you with the estimated time they’ll reach their stop in the afternoon.

Bus Tracking App

The bus tracking app should be working for all routes at this point. Our home office had to readjust the GPS signal on the buses. If your app is still not working during the bus times in the morning or afternoon, please report it to the front office. You can find the instructions to download the bus tracking app on our social media pages. Or call the office to have a flyer sent home with your student.

Social Media Safety:

We have recently seen an uptick in students who are engaging with social media accounts, specifically on Instagram, that are created to share anonymous information about our school or post pictures of other students. The safety of our school community is everyone’s responsibility, and we encourage our families to check in with your students about their social media use and who students are interacting with on social media.

We also encourage students and families to report unsafe social media accounts directly to the social media platform, and if there is concerning information that could impact our school, we ask you to please notify us.

We encourage you to review the Social Media Safety Resource Guide from Crimestoppers as we all work together to keep our school community safe.

After School Activities:

Starting in February, we have Aviators staying on campus after school every day for varying activities: ASPIRE, Tutorials, and athletics. If your student is staying for ASPIRE, please do not arrive to pick them up until after 5:30pm and use the second dismissal lane (pictured below). Tutorials and athletics will use the first dismissal lane starting at 5:00pm. Please allow space for cars to pass in the lines. We appreciate your flexibility with this system as we work to adjust to having multiple after school activities running for our students!

Dress Code:

Due to an increased number of dress code violations, we are working to support students in promoting a positive learning environment. Students who come to school wearing athletic pants, ripped pants, crop tops, crocs/slides (shoes) or other clothing that does not meet our dress code will call home for a change of clothes. Thank you for helping us uphold a positive learning environment by sending your students to school following our dress code policy.

You can find our dress code policy in our Hobby Individual Campus Supplement Handbook. Find the complete student handbooks here

Late Arrival Traffic Update:

We’re adjusting our late arrival traffic pattern and drop-off arrival area starting this Monday, 1/31. This change is to keep our students safe as they exit their cars and help keep the front driveway clear of accidents. We will only use this process from 8:30am-8:40am.

Any Aviator dropped off after 8:30am will receive a tardy demerit which may lead to them serving a lunch detention.

Please follow these steps if you need to drop off your student from 8:30-8:40am. Do not enter through the main office gate for late arrival drop off from 8:30-8:40am.

  1. Enter through the second gate on Tallyho. This is the same gate we use at dismissal time.

  1. Pull up to the arrival drop-off area and let your Aviator out so they enter Hobby at the Building 3 door. Two staff members will be there to meet your student.

After 8:40am, all late students should be dropped off at the front office.

COVID-19 Health and Safety Reminders:

As we start the second semester, we know that COVID-19 continues to impact our school and broader Houston community.

We encourage Aviators to stay home when they are not feeling well and ask that you please contact the school at 713-842-5600 if your student is going to be absent.

If your student tests positive for COVID-19, please contact us as soon as you are able. Students with a positive COVID-19 test result may return to school when:

  • Ten (10) days have passed since a positive COVID-19 test result or symptom onset, AND
  • The students’ symptoms have improved, AND
  • The student is fever-free for 24 hours without medication. A “fever” is considered a temperature 100.0 higher.

Ways to Keep Our Community Safe

  • Wearing a mask is the expectation while on campus. Students should continue to wear a mask on the bus, at school, and while at school-sponsored events.
  • We continue to clean our school on a regular schedule and pay close attention to the cleaning of high-traffic areas.
  • We ask families to please conduct an at-home health screening each day to ensure that your student, and all YES Prep community members, stay safe and COVID-free.
  • Lastly, vaccination is currently the best protection against COVID-19. Health officials encourage everyone 5 years and older to get vaccinated and for those eligible, a booster dose. YES Prep continues to offer COVID-19 vaccines via Legacy Community Health clinics located at various YES Prep campuses. Schedule your child's vaccination with Legacy by clicking here.
